Using Face ID and biometrics

1 min readUpdated Jul 9, 2026

Face ID (or your device’s fingerprint) is a faster alternative to typing your PIN when you confirm a withdrawal to a new address. It uses your device’s Telegram biometrics, so the check happens on your phone.

Enrolling Face ID

  1. Open Security in the app.
  2. Choose to enroll biometrics. Your device prompts for Face ID or fingerprint.
  3. Enter the email code (OTP) the app sends you to authorize it.

Enrolling — and later changing — biometrics is authorized by an email code, the same way the PIN is. This stops a stolen Telegram session from silently enrolling its own device. See email verification.

Using it to confirm a withdrawal

When you withdraw to an address you haven’t used before, the app asks for Face ID instead of the PIN. A confirmed address is trusted for future withdrawals, so you’re only prompted the first time.

It falls back to the PIN

Biometrics are a convenience layer, not a replacement for the PIN. If Face ID isn’t available — a new device, biometrics turned off, or a failed scan — the app falls back to your PIN. Keep a PIN set so you always have a way to confirm.

You’re notified of every change

Enrolling or removing biometrics fires a critical Telegram message.
